What students learn

Students learn a wide range of subjects in the NSW curriculum. They build skills, think creatively and prepare for life beyond school.

English
English is a core subject which is mandatory from Years K-12. In English, students study language in its various textual forms, which develop in complexity, to understand how meaning is shaped, conveyed, interpreted, and reflected.
Mathematics
Mathematics is a core subject which is mandatory from Years K-12. Students will learn to ‘work mathematically’ as they engage with content across three main strands: number and algebra, measurement and space, and statistics and probability.
Creative Arts
Creative Arts is a core subject which is mandatory from Years K-12. Creative Arts encompasses learning in Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts. Each arts focus area has a distinct body of knowledge, creative and critical practices, and individual ways of understanding the world. The arts provide students with opportunities for creativity, self-expression, self-awareness, enjoyment and creating shared meaning. The arts are central to the development of creative, confident, compassionate and resilient individuals.
Human Society and its Environment
Human Society and its Environment (HSIE) is a core subject which is mandatory from Years K-12. It incorporates the study of people, places and environments, as well as how people and events from the past have shaped societies over time. Through the foundational knowledge, understanding and skills of geography and history, HSIE introduces students to the complex interconnections between people and places, past and present so they can become active, confident, engaged and valued members of Australia’s diverse community.
PDHPE
Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) is a core subject which is mandatory from Years K-12. It equips students with the knowledge and skills to positively influence their own and others’ safety, health and wellbeing. Students will build their understanding through four main focus areas: movement skill and physical activity, respectful relationships and safety, identity, health and wellbeing, and self-management and interpersonal skills.
Science and Technology
Science and Technology are core subjects, meaning they are mandatory from Years K-12. These areas foster student’s sense of wonder about the world around them and knowledge of how it works. This study encourages students to embrace new concepts and learn to observe, develop testable questions, and test and evaluate ideas to refine their understanding.
Religion and Ethics

During enrolment, you can choose a special religious education option for your child from the school’s available approved providers. You can withdraw your child from special religious education by selecting alternative meaningful activities, or special education in ethics if it’s available.

You can update your preference by writing to the school or through the online form available at participating schools.

Visit the department’s website for more information about religion and ethics.

Special Religious Education and Non-Religious Classes

Special Religious Education (SRE) and Non-Religious classes will commence in Term 1, Week 5.
